Block Towers

Explanation with example for the task type kloetzchentuerme.

Count the blocks in each tower.
Write the number in the box.

Towers together: tower A + tower B = result
Taking towers apart: blocks are taken off the tower -
what is left is the result. Tower A − tower B = result
The numbers shown give the answer.

Example

+=3 + 2 = 5
-=5 - 2 = 3

What does this exercise practice?

This task links visual counting with addition and subtraction: children see how tower heights connect directly with numbers and math operations.

Common pitfalls

Children count the blocks correctly but mix up the order of the tower sizes when adding up. Suggest always counting tower A first, then tower B, then doing the math.

How to practice at home

Build two towers with Lego bricks or books. Who counts faster how many bricks both towers have together? Then make one tower smaller: how many are left?
