In these riddles you calculate with days.
Think carefully: do you need to add or subtract?
'In 5 days' means: + 5
'4 days ago' means: - 4
What does this exercise practice?
This exercise trains calculating with time and the confident use of a calendar. Children learn to jump forward and backward along a number row.
Common pitfalls
The direction of the calculation is the biggest hurdle: 'in X days' means adding, 'X days ago' means subtracting. Children mix up both directions. It helps to point along the calendar with a finger.
How to practice at home
Hang up a real calendar and ask questions every day: when is the weekend? In how many days is Grandma's birthday? How long until the holidays? An everyday connection makes abstract counting concrete.
