A domino has two fields with dots.
Count the dots on the left side.
Count the dots on the right side.
Add both dot counts together.
The filled-in example next to it shows the answer.
Example
- 1 + 2 = 3
- 3 + 1 = 4
What does this exercise practice?
Quickly grasping small dot amounts without counting one by one builds number sense and prepares for mental math.
Common pitfalls
Some children count every dot one by one. Dice patterns may be recognized as a whole, which is faster.
How to practice at home
Play with real dominoes and on each tile add up the dots of both sides.
