1. Start at the entrance in the first square.
Example: the entrance is at the 3.
2. Do the first problem in your head.
3 + 1 = 4. The next square in the dungeon is 4.
3. Look for the square with the 4 right next to it.
Step into that square.
4. Take the new number (4) and do the next problem:
4 - 2 = 2. The next square in the dungeon is 2.
5. Go on like this step by step all the way to the exit!
Example
What does this exercise practice?
This exercise trains mental math in a chain structure and spatial thinking: children calculate step by step and read the result as the next position.
Common pitfalls
Children easily lose track of which number they are using right now. Suggest saying the in-between result of each step out loud before they look for the next square.
How to practice at home
Draw a small grid on paper and write numbers into it. Take turns posing problems: start is 5, calculate +3, where is the next square? The other one looks for the 8 in the grid.
