Halving

Explanation with example for the task type halbieren.

Halving means: split the number fairly into two equal parts.
Example: half of 10 is 5
Check: 5 + 5 = 10.
The filled in numbers show the answer.

Example

10÷ 2 =5 (5 + 5 = 10)

What does this exercise practice?

Halving is the inverse operation of doubling. It lays the foundation for dividing by 2.

Common pitfalls

Children get confused when halving odd numbers. With odd numbers, first check whether the half makes a whole number, that is not always the case.

How to practice at home

When cutting fruit or bread: can you split it into two equal halves? How much is the half? This makes halving very concrete.
