When adding past ten, an in-between step helps.
First fill the first number up to ten.
Then add the rest of the second number.
The filled-in example next to it shows the two steps.
Example
8 + 5: 8 +2 → 10 +3 → 13
7 + 6: 7 +3 → 10 +3 → 13
What does this exercise practice?
The bridge over ten makes crossing the ten easy to grasp: first fill up to ten, then keep adding. This strengthens clever calculating.
Common pitfalls
The second number has to be split correctly. First think about how much is missing up to ten, then work out the rest.
How to practice at home
Use ten fingers or a row of ten to show how you first fill up to ten and then count on.
