First look at how the pattern continues - left and right of the gap, above and below.
Then work out which shape belongs in each single square of the gap.
Only after that compare the pieces on offer. That way you do not have to guess.

The missing piece practises pattern recognition and applying a rule to a hidden spot.

Common pitfalls

Two pieces often look very similar and differ in only one square. So really compare every square separately.

How to practice at home

Cut up a patterned sheet of paper, hide one piece and let someone put it back.
