In a picture graph each thing has its own row of pictures.
Count the pictures in a row, then you know how many there are.
Matching pictures stand neatly side by side, so you can count them easily.

What does this exercise practice?
The picture graph helps children practice careful counting and reading off quantities from a picture. Children learn to take in data in an orderly way before tables and graphs with numbers follow.
Common pitfalls
Children miscount when they count without a system. It helps to touch each picture once with a finger and count out loud, one row after the other.
How to practice at home
Lay things out in rows at home, for example forks, spoons, and knives. Ask each other: Which one do we have the most of? Which the least? That way you practice comparing amounts.
