Lay out the right coins to pay the amount.
Start with the biggest coins!
Which coins do you need? The filled in coins show the answer.
Example
What does this exercise practice?
This exercise teaches paying with real coins: children learn to put together an amount with the biggest coins possible and develop an understanding of money values.
Common pitfalls
Children tend to take many small coins instead of big ones. Using real coins, show that a 1 euro coin is worth the same as ten 10 cent pieces, so the value becomes tangible.
How to practice at home
Give the child a small wallet with real loose change on the next shopping trip. Let them gather the amount for a loaf of bread or a magazine themselves. Real money sticks in the memory.
