What does this exercise practice?

This task practices position relationships and orientation in a grid. Children turn direction words into movements while keeping track of their position, a foundation for spatial thinking.

Common pitfalls

Children mix up left and right or forget which step they are on. It helps to put a finger on the current square and only move on once the step is clear.

How to practice at home

Play robot: one person names directions like right, right, up, the other walks them out in the room. Does the path reach the goal? Then swap roles.
