Counting Shapes

Explanation with example for the task type formen_zaehlen.

Look at the picture carefully.
Find all shapes of one kind, for example all circles.
Count them and write the number in the box.

Example

Kreis: 2

What does this exercise practice?

This task trains careful observation and counting by category: children learn to look for a certain shape and count only the matching objects.

Common pitfalls

Children often count all objects together instead of just the ones asked for. Suggest tapping each matching object with a finger and counting out loud before writing the number.

How to practice at home

Put different toys (building blocks, modeling clay) on the table. Ask questions: How many round blocks are there? How many triangles? Counting everyday amounts builds careful looking.
