Reading a Tally Chart

Explanation with example for the task type strichliste.

In a tally chart each thing has a row of tally marks.
Every four marks are crossed off by the fifth.
That way you can count quickly in steps of five.
The filled-in example next to it shows the answer.

The tally chart introduces bundled counting in fives and prepares for bundling in tens.

Common pitfalls

Children often count the marks one by one. The bundles of five allow faster counting: five, ten, then on by ones.

How to practice at home

While playing, count along how often something happens and make a mark for each hit.
