Reading the Clock

Explanation with example for the task type uhr_lesen.

The small hand shows the hours.
The big hand shows the minutes.

When the big hand points up at 12, it is a full hour.
When the big hand points down at 6, half an hour has passed.
Then we say "half past" and the hour. So 3:30 is "half past 3".
The filled in words show the answer.

Example

1212345678910113:30

What does this exercise practice?

This exercise practices reading analog clocks and builds a sense of time, an everyday skill children need their whole life.

Common pitfalls

The small and big hand are often mixed up. A memory trick: the small hand is short like an hour, the big hand turns quickly like the minutes.

How to practice at home

Hang up an analog clock at home and ask several times a day: what does the clock show? When getting up, at lunch, before bedtime.
