Imagine lining the bars up at the same starting point, then you can see which one reaches further.
The ruler helps you: read off at the tip how many centimeters a bar is long.
Example: bar A is 14 cm, bar B is 9 cm.
14 is more than 9, so bar A is longer and bar B is shorter.
For the question about the longest bar you look for the biggest number.
For the question about the shortest bar you look for the smallest number.
The numbers filled in show the solution.
Example
For parents
What does this exercise practice?
Read lengths off a ruler and compare them by size.
Common pitfalls
Children often compare the end points without paying attention to the same starting point. Always line the bars up at the zero of the ruler.
How to practice at home
Compare pens, spoons or books at home: which is the longest, which the shortest? Measure with a ruler.
