Counting Money

We calculate with dollars ($) and cents (¢).
1 dollar is worth exactly as much as 100 cents.

First count the big coins, then add the small ones.
How much money is here? The filled in amount shows the answer.

Example

5€2€1€50ct= $8 50¢

For parents

What does this exercise practice?

This exercise shows how different coin values are added up, even beyond several dollars, and connects calculating with an everyday situation.

Common pitfalls

Children often count the coins all over the place and lose track. It helps to sort the coins by value and add from the largest to the smallest.

How to practice at home

Put loose change from the wallet on the table and count it together. How much is everything together? Is it enough for an ice cream?
