Dividing with a remainder

Not every number can be shared out evenly.
What is left over is the remainder.

Example: 37 : 5
5 fits into 37 seven times (5 · 7 = 35).
2 are left over, that is the remainder.
37 : 5 = 7 remainder 2
The numbers filled in show the solution.

Example

  • 7, 2
  • 6, 4

For parents

What does this exercise practice?

This exercise extends the understanding of division: children learn that sharing out still makes sense even when it does not work out evenly, and they name the remainder.

Common pitfalls

Children often pick a number that is too big and overlook that the product then becomes larger than the starting number. Help them recite the row of multiples and stop at the last value below the number.

How to practice at home

Share things out fairly at home: 37 sweets among 5 children. How many does each child get, and how many stay in the bowl? That makes the remainder vivid.
