Every number sits on two poles.
On the tens pole (Z) you colour the tens, on the ones pole (E) the ones.
Always colour from the bottom up.
Example: The number 34 has 3 tens and 4 ones.
On the Z pole you colour 3 fields, on the E pole 4 fields.
Example
- 34 (3 Z + 4 E)
- 52 (5 Z + 2 E)
- 27 (2 Z + 7 E)
- 18 (1 Z + 8 E)

Common pitfalls
Some children colour the whole number on one pole. Remind them that tens and ones each have their own pole.
