Halving means: splitting a number into two equal parts.
You ask yourself: which number plus itself gives this number?
Example: half of 20 is 10.
Because 10 and 10 together make 20 (10 + 10 = 20).
Tip: halving is the reverse of doubling.
The numbers filled in show the solution.
Example
For parents
What does this exercise practice?
Split a number into two equal parts confidently and name the half.
Common pitfalls
With tens numbers that have an odd tens digit (e.g. 30) the ten has to be split: half of 30 is 15, not 10. Saying it out loud helps.
How to practice at home
Share things fairly together: 20 building blocks into two piles, a bar of chocolate into two equal halves. That makes halving tangible.
