In a grid the squares have names, letters on top and numbers on the left.
You find a square by putting the column and the row together, for example B1.
Example: color in the squares B1, C1 and D1.
That makes a horizontal line at the top, the start of a figure.
Color in all the named squares, then the magic picture appears (here a 5).
The numbers filled in show the solution.

What does this exercise practice?
Find squares reliably from column and row and make a pattern appear.
Common pitfalls
Column and row are easily swapped. Say it out loud: first the letter (column), then the number (row).
How to practice at home
Play battleships or read out squares like C4 on a city map, that practices exactly the same search.
