Measuring Lengths

Lengths are measured in centimetres (cm) and metres (m).

1 m = 100 cm

This is how you convert:

Metres into centimetres: multiply by 100.
2 m = 200 cm
5 m = 500 cm

Centimetres into metres: divide by 100 (when it is a round 100, 200, 300 ... cm).
300 cm = 3 m
700 cm = 7 m

Mixed metres and centimetres:
1 m 50 cm = 150 cm (1 m is 100 cm, plus 50 cm = 150 cm)
230 cm = 2 m 30 cm (200 cm is 2 m, the remaining 30 cm stay centimetres)

Examples from everyday life:
A pencil is about 18 cm long.
A door is about 2 m high.

The numbers already filled in show the solution.

For parents

What does this exercise practice?

Learn to estimate lengths and convert them into cm, m and mixed units.

Common pitfalls

Mixing up cm and m, forgetting the 100, or overlooking the remainder in mixed values.

How to practice at home

Measure objects at home, estimate first and then check with a ruler.
