When the big hand jumps to the next number, 5 minutes have passed.
When the big hand is on the 2, it is ten past. On the 6 it is half past.

Common pitfalls
When reading the minutes, children often count the numbers instead of the minute steps. A memory trick: each number on the clock stands for five minutes, so count on in steps of five.
How to practice at home
Hang up an analog clock at home and ask several times a day: how many minutes past the hour is it now? When getting up, at lunch, before bedtime.
