Converting Units

1 m is 100 cm, 1 km is 1000 m, 1 kg is 1000 g, and 1 l is 1000 ml.

Here is how:
1. Look closely at the two units.
2. Think about how many times the small unit fits into the big one.
3. Multiply or divide: 3 m is 3 times 100 cm, so 300 cm.

The filled in number shows the answer.

Example

  • 300
  • 2000

For parents

What does this exercise practice?

This exercise reinforces the conversion numbers between units and connects understanding of measurements with calculating with powers of ten.

Common pitfalls

Children often mix up the direction and divide where they should multiply. It helps to ask whether the answer must be bigger or smaller than the starting number.

How to practice at home

Look at packaging in the kitchen and convert together, for example how many grams are in 2 kg of flour.
