Finding the Mistake in the Chart

At the top you see a tally list. It shows how much there is of each thing.
Below is the same thing as a bar chart.
Exactly one bar is drawn wrong, it is too high or too low.
Count every tally and compare it with the height of the bar.
Circle the wrong bar and write the correct number next to it.

The circled bar shows the solution.

Example

  • Dove: richtig 7 (gezeichnet 4)

For parents

What does this exercise practice?

Read a tally list and a bar chart as two representations of the same data and check that they match.

Common pitfalls

Children often count the tally marks inaccurately. Tip: every bundle is exactly 5, then add the single marks.

How to practice at home

Collect things at home (buttons, stones) and draw a tally list and a bar chart of them. Build in a mistake on purpose and have it searched for.
