Each column has two numbers, one on top and one below.
Choose exactly one number from each column so the sum is right.
There is always only one path that adds up to exactly the target sum.
Example: Target sum 9
Column 1: top 2, bottom 5. Column 2: top 3, bottom 7.
Try: 2 + 3 = 5, 2 + 7 = 9, 5 + 3 = 8, 5 + 7 = 12.
Only 2 + 7 makes 9, that is the right path.

Common pitfalls
Children often only try the top row and give up. It helps to work through all paths in order and compare them with the target sum.
How to practice at home
Lay out two pairs of cards and say a target number. The child looks for one card from each pair whose sum fits.
