Multiplying

How many times do you need to take a number to reach the target number?

Example: How many times does 7 fit into 28?
7 + 7 + 7 + 7 = 28, so 7 fits in four times.
That is the same as 4 · 7 = 28.

The numbers filled in show the solution.

Example

7 + 7 + 7 + 7=287fits4times
4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4=244fits6times

For parents

What does this exercise practice?

Common pitfalls

Children sometimes forget to count the starting number. Write out the whole addition chain and count the terms.

How to practice at home

Arrange equal-sized piles of pasta or buttons and count in steps up to the total.
