Arrow Maths

The four corners hold numbers, the arrows show the calculation steps.
Follow the arrow and calculate what is written above it.
The number in the middle is the same for both diagonals.
Where a field is empty, you fill in the missing operation.

Example: The corners hold 1, 2, 3 and 4.
From 1 to 2, +1 is missing, because 1 + 1 = 2.
From 1 to 3 (diagonal), +2 fits, because 1 + 2 = 3.
The steps filled in show the solution.

Example

1234+1+1+1−3+2

For parents

What does this exercise practice?

Determine addition and subtraction steps from two given numbers and recognise the connection between corners and diagonals.

Common pitfalls

Some children calculate the arrows in the wrong direction. The arrow always points from the starting number to the target number: getting smaller is minus, getting bigger is plus.

How to practice at home

Draw your own arrow cross with four corner numbers and work out together which operation fits in the middle so that both diagonals work out equally.
