With mental multiplication jottings, you split the first number into tens and ones.
Then you multiply both parts separately and add the partial results.
Example: 14 · 6 split up
14 · 6 = 10 · 6 + 4 · 6
= 60 + 24
= 84
The numbers filled in show the solution.
Example
- 60,24,84
- 80,12,92
For parents
What does this exercise practice?
This exercise strengthens place-value understanding and shows a flexible calculation method before written multiplication is introduced.
Common pitfalls
Children sometimes only multiply the ones and forget the tens. It helps to write down both partial products before adding.
How to practice at home
Break down small everyday multiplication problems, for example 4 packs of 16 pencils each.
