The short hand shows the hour, the long hand shows the minutes.
Here is how:
1. First look at the short hand and find the hour.
2. Then look at the long hand: each big mark is 5 minutes.
3. Example: short hand just past the 4, long hand on the 2, so 4:10.
The filled in time shows the answer.
Example
For parents
What does this exercise practice?
Confidently read times on an analog clock, from full hours to 5-minute steps.
Common pitfalls
Children often mix up the hands or read the number instead of the minutes on the long hand, so 2 instead of 10 minutes. Practice counting on in steps of five out loud.
How to practice at home
Look at the clock together several times a day and have your child say the time, for example before meals and before bedtime.
