In a word problem, the calculation is hidden in a short story.
Here is how:
1. Read the problem carefully. What is given, what is asked?
2. Think about whether you need to add, subtract, multiply, or divide.
3. Calculate and write an answer sentence.
Tip: Underline the important numbers in the story.

Example
245 adults and 138 children are sitting in the cinema. How many people are watching the film?
A farmer harvests 430 apples. He sells 160 apples at the market. How many apples are left?
