Path to the Number

You go from start to goal.
The arrows show the two directions you may go.
Add up all the numbers on your path. Only one path makes exactly the target number.

Example:
The arrows point right and down. First down, then right, down, right.
1 + 3 + 1 + 4 + 1 = 10. That is the right path!

Example

123312241

For parents

What does this exercise practice?

In Path to the Number, children compare several sums instead of working out just one. They practice adding small numbers and learn to go through all the options in order instead of guessing.

Common pitfalls

Children often forget to count the start or the goal number, or step back against an arrow once. It helps to trace the path with a finger and say each number out loud.

How to practice at home

Draw a 2 by 2 grid and write small numbers in it. There are only two paths from one corner to the opposite one. Which one is bigger? Then try a 3 by 3 grid.
