Treasure chest

Euli has gold coins in the boat and sails from island to island. Every island has hiding spots.
Each free hiding spot ○ gets one coin. If an island is already full, Euli sails straight on.
All the coins that are left go into the treasure chest. How many are there?

What does this exercise practice?

The treasure chest practices counting and taking away - how many hiding spots are free, and how many coins are left after that? Sometimes the boat runs out first, and then the chest stays empty.

Common pitfalls

A common mistake is to put a coin on a full island anyway, or to count the spots that are already taken. Only the free hiding spots take coins.

How to practice at home

Act it out with plates as islands and buttons as coins - put a few buttons on some plates first, and a bowl is the treasure chest.
