Written Multiplication

With written multiplication, you calculate digit by digit, from right to left.

Here is how you do it:
1. First multiply the ones. Write down the ones digit of the result.
2. If the partial result is bigger than 9, a carry goes into the small box of the next column.
3. Then multiply the tens and add the carry. For three-digit numbers, the hundreds follow.

Example: 58 × 4
Ones: 8 × 4 = 32. You write 2 and carry 3.
Tens: 5 × 4 = 20, plus the carry 3 makes 23.
Result: 232

The numbers filled in show the solution.

Example

58× 4232
134× 6804

For parents

What does this exercise practice?

This exercise trains the standard written method of multiplication and confident calculation with carries.

Common pitfalls

Children often forget the carry or write the partial result in the wrong column. It helps to say each digit out loud.

How to practice at home

While shopping, calculate using the written method, for example what 4 notebooks at 85¢ each cost.
