Comparing numbers

When comparing you look at which number is bigger.
There are three signs for that: smaller (<), greater (>) and equal (=).
The open end of the sign always points to the bigger number.

Example: 623,456 < 891,234
623,456 is smaller than 891,234, so the point faces the 623,456.

Tip: compare from left to right, place by place: first hundred thousands, then ten thousands, then thousands.
If one place is bigger, the whole number is bigger, no matter what comes after it.
The numbers written in show the answer.

Example

623,456<891,234
567,890=567,890

For parents

What does this exercise practice?

Comparing numbers up to 1,000,000 safely by size and putting in the right sign.

Common pitfalls

Children often turn the sign the wrong way. Memory trick: the crocodile mouth is hungry and snaps at the bigger number.

How to practice at home

Compare populations of towns or mileages: what is more, what is less?
