Semi-written Division

With semi-written division, you split the big number into two parts that can both be divided by the divisor.
The first part is a round number that ends in 0 and divides without a remainder, the rest is what is left over. Then you divide both parts separately and add the results.

Example: 1,932 ÷ 6 split up
1,932 ÷ 6 = 1,920 ÷ 6 + 12 ÷ 6
= 320 + 2
= 322

The numbers filled in show the solution.

Example

1932 : 6 =
= 1920 : 6 + 12 : 6
= 320 + 2
= 322
2754 : 9 =
= 2700 : 9 + 54 : 9
= 300 + 6
= 306

For parents

What does this exercise practice?

Dividing four-digit numbers by splitting them cleverly, in your head and with notes, before or alongside written division.

Common pitfalls

Children sometimes split into parts that cannot be divided by the divisor. It helps to look for the largest round number that still fits and divides without a remainder.

How to practice at home

Split out loud when sharing things at home, for example $1,254 of travel money over 6 weeks as 1,200 and 54.
